About the course

Conversation School is an online platform where learners can learn informal French in fun, real-world ways.

We're focused on getting you to speak conversational, informal French in 6 weeks through daily interaction with peers in a pod. You'll learn over 1000 of the most used words & phrases, including greetings, common questions, expressions, filler words, idioms and more, picked from dialogues, memes, cartoons, skits, vlogs, movies and more.

Complete beginners to intermediary learners can join this course.

Absolutely! One of the best features of the Experience is that you get ample opportunities to practice your language skill. So if you already know some French, you can use the course to test and improve your skill.

No, it's totally doable! We are not promising that you'll be fluent just yet. But you'll be functionally conversational, which is the sweet spot we want to get you to. Why? Because this will boost your confidence and encourage you to get into more conversations so you can continue to pick up even more French in the same natural way that you learned to speak your first language.

Yes — our goal is to get you speaking as quickly as possible. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to handle everyday conversations like introductions, small talk, and common situations with confidence.

You can expect to reach between A1 (beginner) & A2 (conversational intermediate). This means you'll be able to introduce yourself, talk about everyday topics and understand/respond in basic conversations (functionally conversational). You may struggle a bit with grammar & complex tenses, but you'll make yourself understood in real-life, informal situations enough to keep conversing, which is how you will continue to improve outside this course.

No. However, it will set you up to start strong and finish up any other certification.

How it works

As soon as you sign up, you’ll get login credentials instantly in your email box so you can access your course materials and start learning right away. You’ll also be guided step-by-step on how to progress through the modules and begin practising real conversations.

We deliver the course to you through our learning platform, which has plugged into it reading materials, cartoons, videos, flashcards, audio aids, downloadable worksheets, templates, and more. Group work happens in our friendly community on Discord.

We estimate that you can plan to spend 1 - 1.5 hours per day, split across self study, listening, and speaking components of the course.

The language of instruction is English. You will learn French words and phrases, and their English Language translations.

Our language course is very immersive and daily contact with the language using written explanations, audio and video pronunciation aid tools, with spaced repetition aids to help you retain more vocabulary. We encourage practice over perfection, so our speaking activities will encourage you to speak often even if you make mistakes. Moreover, you will be placed in a community where you'll have lots of interactions with peers, with an instructor or a moderators ready to offer corrections.

You'll be able to self correct by simply saying a word or phrase aloud, then playing the audio aid next to the word or phrase within the course modules to hear a native speaker say it. Also, we encourage you to use your new language as much as possible outside the course so your listeners can correct you—that's half the fun of learning a new language!

If you are unable to finish, you are welcome to stay on in the community to continue to pick up the language at your own pace. You'll also have lifetime access to the course materials to help you, so it's always a win to join!

Community

A cohort is a six week period within which you have to finish your course; it's a perfect timeframe for an intensive learning sprint like this one. You can also think of a cohort as a group of learners learning together at a specific time. This arrangement ensures you are not learning alone, and you have a support and accountability group to help you stay motivated and of course for practice.

Within a cohort, you will be placed in a pod of 5-10 learners.

A commitment pod (or simply, a pod) is a small group of learners at a similar stage in the course. Pods create social gravity for learners. Pods practise together, keep each other accountable, and make the learning experience feel less like a solo journey and more like a shared one.

You'll be automatically added to a pod of 5-10 learners when you arrive the Discord practice community.

Mentors are native and non-native French speakers within the community — they provide conversation practice, and guide and support students through the Experience. They offer encouragement, share tips, and help keep you on track.

Coaches are graduated students who have completed the CS-French Experience. Having walked the same path, they can provide you first-hand insight into what works — and model language learning and community behavior.

Pricing & payment

Yes — you can start completely free with no credit card required. You’ll get access to the core course and can learn at your own pace. If you ever want more support, certificates, or extras, you can choose to upgrade later.

Our main aim is to help people acquire a new language to unlock exciting new opportunities as our co-founders are on a journey of their own (we hope to tell our story one day soon 😊). We'd love to keep it free forever, but it's very likely that as we grow, we may need to grow our team and build out more features, which increases overhead. But for now, it's free to join, if you like!

You can't guess this, but we're a 2-man team with very limited resources and technical know-how. We recognise that we can only do so much on our own before we need to hire for some additional expertise and platform capabilities.

  • The fee you see is a token you can give ONLY IF you wish to support our work. By giving, you give us the capacity to onboard more learners (the more learners, the more opportunity for language practice for everyone!)
  • You can give at any time—before, during or after the course. No need to do it right away!
  • If you give a token, then we say 'thank you' by giving you a few extra perks such as a printable certificate, etc. (see 'Signup' for more details).

We kindly ask that you consider this option as this helps us out a lot. Thank you in advance!

It's straightforward to ask for a refund. But before you do, we ask that you give us a chance to make things right if they are wrong: send us a mail at support@conversationschool.net

Keep in mind, it can take up to 14 days to process a refund.

Becoming a mentor

Our mentorship program connects French language enthusiasts with students learning through the CS-French Experience. Mentors can be either native or non-native French speakers, but must be fluent in conversational French and passionate about helping others learn.

Mentors provide conversation practice, answer questions, share cultural insights, and support students in the Discord Language Lab community. We're looking for people who genuinely enjoy meeting new learners and are passionate about sharing their love of French.

Mentors provide conversation practice, answer questions, share cultural insights, and support students in the Discord Language Lab community. We're looking for people who genuinely enjoy meeting new learners and are passionate about sharing their love of French.

Mentors must commit to at least 5 hours per week, be fluent in conversational French, and sign a Mentor Service Agreement outlining all terms and expectations. You'll review the complete agreement before committing, so you'll know exactly what's involved.

This is a part-time paid role; mentors earn through shared revenue. You'll receive 40% of course price shared between student savings and mentor earnings. Payments are processed every two weeks (bi-weekly).

A mentor may also receive a job reference from us, based on engagement & performance.
